Heat Island Technology
Log style herbal roasters have existed for more than three decades. They consist of an electrically powered heating element surrounded by a metal heater cover contained within a wood body. They generate hot air, which is then drawn into a separate roasting tube containing the herbal material. Botanical oils within the herbal material become volatilized with the flow of hot air. The herbal material is heated mostly by means of convective heat transfer, which allows for the best flavor.
Metal heater covers conductively transfer heat to the wood body, which can cause charring if too much heat is transferred to the wood. Heat Island Technology resolved this problem with a heater cover design that transfers little heat to the wood and most of the heat to the air.
Approximately 7 watts of heat is generated by applying around 12 volts to the heating element. The temperatures of the heating element and heater cover reach around 450F, heating the air passing over them to almost the same temperature. Openings are made into the lower portion of the stainless steel heater cover which perform two functions. They eliminate a portion of the stainless steel tube which reduces the conduction path down to the base by approximately 90%, creating an island of heat. Most of the heat is confined to top of the stainless steel heater cover and available for heating air. The small amount of heat that reaches the wood isn’t enough to cause charring. The openings also serve as the air intake to the stainless steel heater cover.
Since the mass of the stainless steel heater cover is small, it will heat up to roasting temperature in about 5 minutes at 12vdc. The mass of the glass heater cover is even less, which allow it to heat up in about 2 minutes at 12vdc. The HI is designed for 24/7 operation and can be left plugged in continuously, so it is always ready to use.

Heat Island
The Heat Island (HI) is a convection style herbal roaster and the first to use Heat Island Technology, which is why it is so fast and efficient. The heater cover can be either stainless steel (3/8”, 7/16”) or glass (10mm, 12mm). There are slits in the end of the glass heater covers which force the hot air to the perimeter of the roasting bowl to eliminate center hot spots. A natural cork ring is used to hold the SS or glass heater cover in place in standard HI’s. The two-piece HI’s use two SS screws to hold the SS heater cover to the wood, which also holds the two pieces of wood together. These methods eliminate the wood cracking which can happen with the use of a metal outer sleeves/washers to support the metal heater cover. The HI can be made from almost any wood, since the design prevents cracking or charring of the wood.
The HI is made in several different styles.
The standard HI is about 4” tall / 1.5” in diameter, with either a removable bottom cap that can be made of almost any material, or a natural cork ring to close the hole.
The two-piece HI is about 3.75” tall / 1.5” in diameter and has two pieces of wood connected together using the same two SS wood screws that are used to hold down the SS heater cover. The two-piece Mini HI is about 3.25” tall and 1.5” in diameter.
There are two different roasting tube styles. 5/16” and 3/8” diameter SS roasting tubes fit inside the 3/8” and 7/16” SS heater covers respectively. 10mm and 12mm ID glass or wood tubes slide over 3/8” and 7/16” SS heater covers respectively. 5/16” SS roasting tubes won’t work with the 10mm glass heater cover. 3/8" SS roasting tubes won't work with the 12mm glass heater cover. 10mm ID tubes will work with the 10mm glass heater cover. 12mm ID tubes will work with the 12mm glass heater cover.
Air/Solo stems slide over the end of the 7/16” SS heater covers.
Dynavap tips slide into the end of the 7/16” SS heater covers. All Dynavap tips fit since it uses the OD of the Dynavap tips, which are made to precise tolerances.
The HI is perfect for use with water filtration, due to the low air draw resistance and small size/weight.

Square HI
The Square HI is similar in construction to the two-piece HI, but square in shape. Mini size Square HI’s are also possible. The ones w/ 3/8” SS heater covers are 1.5” square and the ones w/ 7/16” SS heater covers are 1.75” square. The price is lower than a round HI since there is less work involved in creating it. The square shape is less likely to tip over compared to a round shape.

Toasty Top
The Toasty Top uses the same SS heater cover and heating element as the Heat Island. The SS heater cover is held in place with two SS screws. It is unique in that the heating element can be removed for cleaning and/or replacement as necessary, since it threads into the bottom. The Toasty Top requires a stand to set upright because of its special shape. The stand has silicone feet to keep it from sliding around. The cord requires a right angle plug end since it enters from the bottom of the Toasty Top.

Bamboo HI
Bamboo has a natural form which is ideal for making HI's. Natural cork rings are used to hold the heater covers in place. 3/8" ss, 7/16" ss, 10mm glass, or 12mm glass heater covers may be used. The bottom is closed with a natural cork ring. The bamboo HI is also suitable for 24/7 operation like the other HI styles. The price is significantly lower for the bamboo HI since it doesn’t require as much labor as a wood body HI. All efforts are made to select structurally sound material, but cracking is always a possibility with bamboo.

Cone HI
The Cone uses the same stainless steel heater cover and heating element as the Heat Island. The stainless steel heater cover is held in place with two SS screws. It is unique in that the heating element can be removed for cleaning and/or replacement as necessary since it threads into the bottom. The Cone has silicone feet connected to the bottom to prevent slipping and is very stable. The cord requires a right angle plug end since it enters from the bottom of the Cone. It is intended to be used primarily with a silicone hose. They can be made w/ flat sides so it is easier to pick up and use as a regular HI.

Insta Heat
The Insta Heat (aka iHeat) is an on-demand pure convection style herbal roaster that consists of an upper heater section and a lower voltage control section.
The heater section houses a unique spiral shaped heater coil made from 316 stainless steel mesh. The heater coil has a large surface area which allows for fast and efficient air heating without the need to glow. Air is heated as it passes between the heated coils rather than through the mesh. The spiral shaped coil is self supported, so it requires no insulation material between the coils to prevent electrical shorts. Stainless steel foil is placed between the wood body and the heater coil to reflect back much of the radiant heat energy that would have gone to heat the wood body. A ss foil disc positioned in the center of the heater screen diffuses the hot air to the perimeter of the roasting bowl so that the roast is even and no stirring is required. The heater coil is mounted to a 510 deck which slides into a wood body. It can be removed any time for cleaning or coil adjustments. A 19/22 mm taper is cut into the wood body, so there is no glass to break. The heater section is about 2.25" tall and threads onto a base unit that is about 2" tall.
The base section contains a 50 watt capacity voltage controller chip, switch, 12 volt input socket, and potentiometer for voltage adjustment. It requires a 12 volt power supply with at least 8 amps of capacity. A battery pack of sufficient capacity can be used to power the base section.
The heater section can be used on a mod box with at least a 50 watt capacity to make it a portable. The diameter is 1.25” to match the diameter of the base section. The heater section can be made as small as 25mm if it is to only be used on a mod box. This is the most popular option.

Herbal Roasting
Herbal material can be placed into a variety of tubes and roasted by drawing hot air through it from a hot heater cover. Stainless steel screens are placed in the roasting tubes to hold the herbal material. The larger diameter the roasting bowl, the more material it will hold. The larger the hole through the tube, the less air restriction and easier draw it will have. Wooden roasting tubes don't absorb as much heat from the hot air as glass, silicone, or stainless steel, so there is more heat available for roasting. There are many different techniques that can be used for roasting. Good air flow is important to all of the various techniques.
The classic roasting style involves only one screen (flat or basket style). The basket can be flat side up or down. The roasting tube must be held either horizontally or inverted to prevent the roasting material from falling out. Stirring is required for some tubes to obtain an even roast. The stainless steel heater cover has a stainless steel retaining clip which acts as a stop for the roasting tube so it won’t contact the roasting material. This style of roasting requires the screen to be cleaned periodically to keep the air flow good. The herbal material should be loosely ground. Too fine a grind won’t allow adequate air flow. A straw method can be used to draw an appropriate amount of herbal material into the tip of the roasting tube. It is better to start with a small amount, then add more until you find the best amount to use. Blowing a quick puff of air back into the roasting tube, in most cases, will eject the roasted herbal material into a suitable receptacle. To reduce screen clogging, remove the roasted herbal material while the roasting tube is still hot.
An alternate roasting style involves the use of two stainless steel basket type screens. The herbal roasting material is tightly captured between two basket type screens through which all of the hot air is forced. It is the same concept as making espresso. The roasting tube can be held in any orientation since the herbal material is captured between screens. The roast is very even and no stirring is required since the herbal material is completely surrounded by stainless steel screens. The mass of screens are kept as low as possible so that more heat can go for roasting the herbal material.
Yet another roasting style also involves the herbal material captured between two stainless steel screens, but there is space for the herbal material to be stirred by blowing a quick puff of air back into the roasting tube. This style (puff ‘n fluff) ensures an even roast and helps keep the screens clean.

Temperature Control
The temperature of the roasting air is directly related to the voltage applied to the heating element. 12 volts provides a temperature that works very well for dark roasting herbal material. In most cases, the standard 12 volt power supply is more than adequate for roasting. A voltage controller can be used to adjust the voltage being applied to the heating element. It provides a digital display which is nice for monitoring the exact voltage to ensure consistent herbal roasting. The higher the voltage used, the shorter the life of the heating element.
The roasting air temperature can be manually reduced by allowing some room air to leak into the roasting tube. Begin with the tip of the roasting tube held at a 45-degree angle to the heater cover. Decrease the angle to get hotter air. Too much heat, too fast, can scorch the herb. Treat it like slow-roasting a marshmallow.

Aromatherapy
The glass aromatherapy cup works on both glass and stainless steel heater covers. Place a small amount of essential oil in the glass vial, but NOT when installed on the end of the heater cover.

Safety
The Toasty Top and Heat Island are safe to leave plugged in at all times, since the power consumption is low and the temperature at the wood body is far from the combustion point. The heating element is based on 12 volts, which is very safe. Only 12 volts should be applied for continuous use.
